Richard Schmidt (born May 23, 1987 in Trier ) is a German oarsman. He won the gold medal in eighth place at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and also five world and eight European titles.

Career

Richard Schmidt rows for the Treviris rowing club from Trier in 1921 . In the junior area he was able to win two medals at the junior world championships in 2004 and 2005 , in the U23 area a world championship gold medal in 2007 in the four without a helmsman together with Sebastian Schmidt , Fokke Beckmann and Kristof Wilke . In autumn of that year, the team took second place at the European Championships, which were held again for the first time after a long break .

In 2008 Schmidt started with Beckmann at the World Cup opener in Munich in two without a helmsman and at the end of the season was nominated for the German eighth at the U23 World Championships , with which he reached fourth place. In the course of a short-term reshuffle for the Germany eight in the run-up to the 2008 Olympic Games , Schmidt was also nominated as a substitute for Beijing. He and Marco Neumann moved into the four without a helmsman for the semifinals to Gregor Hauffe and Urs Buyer , because Filip Adamski and Toni Seifert were ill. The newly composed team surprisingly reached the final, but there Neumann had to be replaced by Jochen Urban . The boat took 6th place.

In the new Olympic cycle this four formed the core of the newly formed Germany eight with which Schmidt won his first international title at the 2009 World Rowing Championships . In 2010 he and Kristof Wilke won the German championship in two without a helmsman for the first time. With the Germany eight, in which he firmly established himself, he became European champion in September and world champion in November . With Schmidt on board, the German selection also won the third title in a row at the 2011 World Championships . At the 2012 Olympic Games , the favored German eighth in London won the gold medal in the line-up of Filip Adamski, Andreas Kuffner , Eric Johannesen , Maximilian Reinelt , Richard Schmidt, Lukas Müller , Florian Mennigen , Kristof Wilke and helmsman Martin Sauer .

After his success at the Olympic Games, Richard Schmidt continued his career in the rowing boat and remained an integral part of the Germany eight, which has had a strong new permanent rival in the British selection. In the years 2013 to 2016, the German team won the gold medal at the European Championships. In the World Cup finals and the 2016 Olympic final, however, the boat from the United Kingdom was three times faster, so that the Germany eight with Schmidt won the silver medal each time.

In the post-Olympic season 2017, Malte Jakschik , Richard Schmidt, Hannes Ocik and helmsman Martin Sauer were still four men from the previous year on board. The newly composed eighth remained unbeaten in 2017 with victories at the European Championships , two World Cup regattas and the World Championships . In 2018, the Germany eight won all three regattas in the World Cup with the same line-up as in 2017. At the European Championships in Glasgow , the eighth won ahead of the Dutch and the Romanians. A month and a half later, the eighth also won the title at the World Championships in Plovdiv, ahead of the Australians and the British. At the beginning of the 2019 season, the Germany eight won the 2019 European Championships in Lucerne, ahead of the British and the Dutch. At the world championships, the Germans won ahead of the Dutch and the British.

Together with the other members of the Germany eight he received the silver laurel leaf on November 1, 2016 .

Outside of rowing

Schmidt is a sports soldier. He also studied industrial engineering and is currently doing his doctorate on a scholarship in the field of energy technology.
