Bernd Baumgart

Bernd Baumgart (born July 3, 1955 in Wittenberg ) is a former rower from the German Democratic Republic . In 1976 he won the Olympic gold medal in eighth place .

Bernd Baumgart from SC DHfK Leipzig was in 1974 together with Roland Kostulski runner-up in the GDR in two without a helmsman . He had little international regatta experience when he was nominated as batsman for the GDR eight for the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. In the cast Bernd Baumgart, Gottfried Döhn , Werner Klatt , Roland Kostulski, Joachim Lück , Dieter Wendisch , Ulrich Karnatz , Karl-Heinz Prudöhl and helmsman Karl-Heinz Danielowskithe eighth won in the lead with almost five seconds ahead of the British boat. The British were also the main opponents in the final, with the GDR boat winning by two and a half seconds. In 1977 Baumgart sat in the second Leipzig foursome without and finished second in the GDR championship. In 1978 he finished third again in a two-man game.

In 1976 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver for his Olympic victory.

Baumgart had to end his career very early for health reasons. He later worked as a sports teacher at a vocational school in Bernau.
