John Exley (born May 23, 1867 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † July 27, 1938 in Milford , Delaware ) was an American rower and two-time Olympic champion .

He grew up on the prairie and started a cattle trading business. Working with the cattle developed his physique and when he returned to Philadelphia he was spotted by a trainer who noticed his massive upper arms. Exley began rowing and became known as the "Iron Man".

He was batsman in the aft of the Vesper Boat Club from Philadelphia with helmsman Louis Abell . With this he won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Paris in 1900 and four years later at the Summer Games in St. Louis . With the same team as in 1900 in Paris, he also won the national championship of 1902.

He continued rowing until 1912 before turning back to life on the farm.
