Albert Gladstone
Sir Albert Charles Gladstone , 5th Baronet, (born October 28, 1886 in Hawarden Castle , Flintshire , † March 2, 1967 in Fordingbridge , Hampshire ) was a British rower and Olympic champion in eight .
The grandson of British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone first attended Eton College and then studied at Christ Church College in Oxford. From 1906 to 1909 he took part in the Boat Race four times for Oxford , but only won in 1909. In 1908, Gladstone won with the Christ Church eighth at the Henley Royal Regatta . At the 1908 Olympic regatta, which was also held in Henley , Gladstone won the final with the eighth of the Leander Club against the Belgian large boat, which had won in Henley in 1906 and 1907. Gladstone was the youngest member of the Leander Eight in 1908 and was nearly twenty years younger than the oldest rower in the boat, Guy Nickalls .
In 1909 Gladstone graduated from college. During the First World War he was in Mesopotamia and Gallipoli, in 1919 he was awarded the Order of the Order of the British Empire . After the war, Gladstone began his career as a businessman, from 1924 to 1947 he was a director at the Bank of England . In addition, he held several honorary positions, so he was High Sheriff of London in 1929 . From 1935 until his death he was Constable of Flint Castle . On February 12, 1945 he inherited from a cousin the title of 5th Baronet , of Fasque and Balfour in the County of Kincardine, which had been awarded to his great-grandfather on July 18, 1846. On his death in 1967, the title fell to his younger brother Charles as the 6th baronet.
