George Hunt (rower)

George Elwood "Shorty" Hunt (born August 1, 1916 in Puyallup , Washington , † September 3, 1999 in Issaquah , Washington ) was an American rower .

The 1.95 m tall Hunt belonged to the eighth of the Class of 1937 with Herbert Morris and Joseph Rantz . This rowing class of the Washington Huskies , the University of Washington sports team, never beaten in a race , began studying in 1933 and graduated in 1937. Hunt, Morris and Rantz won the 1934 Freshmen title, the 1935 junior title, and the 1936 and 1937 first team titles at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association eighth championships. In 1936, the Huskies eight qualified to compete in the Olympics in Berlin . The eighth with Herbert Morris, Charles Day , Gordon Adam , John White , Jim McMillin , George Hunt, Joseph Rantz, Donald Hume and helmsman Robert Moch won in Berlin ahead of the Italians and the Germans, with all three boats crossing the finish line within a second rowed.

George Hunt graduated as a civil engineer. He was an engineer in the US Navy in the South Pacific during World War II . After the war, he founded the Collins-Hunt Construction company in Seattle and later the George E. Hunt Construction . His company built the Burien City Library and Seattle University's Lemieux Library .
