Wolfgang Maennig

Wolfgang Maennig (born February 12, 1960 in West Berlin ) was Olympic champion in rowing in 1988. Today he is professor of economics and chairman of the supervisory board of Eckert & Ziegler Strahlen- und Medizintechnik AG .

Life

Wolfgang Maennig rowed for the Berlin RK Brandenburgia . In 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1988 he was German champion in four with helmsman and in 1987 and 1988 in eight . At the rowing world championships in 1983 he finished fourth with the four. A year later, he finished sixth in the Los Angeles Olympics . When coach Ralf Holtmeyer reformed the Germany eight in 1987 , Maennig was a substitute for eight at the World Championships. The following year Maennig was in the Germany eight. From 2003 to 2005 he was dean of the economics department at the University of Hamburg. Wolfgang Maennig is still a lecturer at the IREBS Real Estate Academy in Eltville (Rheingau).

He wrote a textbook on the theory and politics of foreign trade (together with Bernd Wilfling) and is the author of numerous articles in scientific journals. For the Olympic applications in Berlin 2000 and Leipzig 2012, he wrote expert opinions on the financial feasibility of the Olympic Games for the application companies. For Munich 2018, he first prepared an opinion on the application expenses, then one on the financing of the Olympic Games.

Maennig also volunteers in the field of sport. From 1989 to 1993 he was a founding member of the Anti-Doping Commission of the German Sports Association . From 1995 to 2001 he was chairman of the German Rowing Association . As chairman, however, Maennig was controversial due to numerous internal discussions. In 2000 Maennig was honored with the Olympic Order for his services to the Olympic movement .

Wolfgang Maenning has dealt extensively with the Bilbao effect in the soccer World Cup host country South Africa.
