Gunther Tiersch

Gunther Tiersch (born April 30, 1954 in Ratzeburg ) is a German meteorologist and one of the youngest German gold medalists at the Olympic Games ( rowing ). He is known to a wide audience as a meteorologist from the weather forecast service following the television news programs heute und heute-journal .

After Tiersch had already achieved the German championship and European championship as the helmsman of the Germany eight in 1967, he won the German championships in 1968 at the age of 14 as the helmsman of the "Ratzeburg eight" and won the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City with the Germany eighth ahead of Australia and the Soviet Union the gold medal.

For winning the European Championships in 1967 he was awarded the silver bay leaf together with the Germany eight on May 10, 1968 . After the Olympic victory, the Germany eight was voted Team of the Year by sports journalists in 1968. The youth newspaper Bravo published its reports from this time in a separate series.

After graduating from high school in 1974 at the Lauenburg School of Academics and Military Service, Tiersch studied meteorology from 1975 to 1982 at the Free University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1988 at the Technical University of Berlin on the subject of determining the current evapotranspiration of agricultural crops with the help of micrometeorological methods . In 1985 he started as a freelancer at ZDF , since 1987 he has been moderating the weather after the main news. In 1990 Tiersch became a permanent employee of the ZDF, since 2004 he has been responsible for the weather department.

In 2019 he appeared on the game show Did you know? as a weather expert.

Tiersch is married and has a daughter and a son.
