Walter Schröder (rower)

Walter Wilhelm Ludwig Schröder (born December 29, 1932 in Campow ) is a former German rower and sports scientist . He won Olympic gold in Rome in 1960.

Life

Walter Schröder started for the Ratzeburg rowing club . In 1957 he was together with Manfred Rulffs German champion in two without a helmsman . In 1958, Rulffs and Schröder sat in the eighth class, newly formed by trainer Karl Adam, and won the German championships in this boat class. In 1959 Adam formed a figure eight out of rowers from his Ratzeburg rowing club and from ATV Ditmarsia Kiel . This racing community became German champions with the line-up of Klaus Bittner , Karl-Heinz Hopp , Hans Lenk , Manfred Rulffs, Frank Schepke , Kraft Schepke , Walter Schröder and Karl-Heinrich von Groddeck with helmsman Willi Padge . Shortly thereafter, the eighth also won the European Championships in 1959. The media coverage of this victory for the Germany eighth was enormous, the boat was voted Team of the Year .

In 1960 the eighth won the German championships and qualified for the Olympic Games in the all-German Olympic elimination . At the Olympic regattas on Lake Albano , the eighth won his prelim and also won the final with a time of 5: 57.18 minutes ahead of the boat from Canada. The nine athletes were once again named Team of the Year.

After his sporting career, Schröder embarked on an academic career. After years as a rowing instructor and lecturer at the University of Hamburg , he received a professorship there in 1979 in the sports department, where he headed the “Movement and Training” department. He brought u. a. as colleagues Arnd Krüger and Hans-Dieter Niedlich . He wrote publications on methodology and history in rowing. Together with his former rowing comrade, the philosophy professor Hans Lenk, Schröder published works by Karl Adam under the title Small writings on rowing training in 1982 . In 1998 he retired.
