Hans-Dieter Niedlich

Hans-Dieter "Nudel" Niedlich (* March 9, 1940 ; † February 12, 2019 ) was a German national basketball player and university professor.

career

The 1.76 meter measuring Niedlich played for the Oldenburg TB from 1954 and rose with the team in the league in 1959 (at that time the highest German division) and in 1966 in the basketball Bundesliga . At times he played football at the same time as the Tura Oldenburg club. He is credited with having significantly shaped basketball in Oldenburg . The playmaker completed international matches for the German senior team in the 1960s and acted as captain. He was considered to be in 1965 he took part in the European Championship and in 1968 in the elimination tournament for the Olympic Games. In 1967, Niedlich went to Hamburg for professional reasons . The Hamburger Abendblattdescribed him in May 1968 as a “brilliant technician and cool tactician”. He was a selection trainer for the Hamburger Basketball Verband and played for the Hamburger Turnerbund from 1862 (HTB). At the end of the 1960s, he worked as a guest trainer to help set up the newly founded SC Rist Wedel . In the 1971/72 season, Niedlich played with the Hamburger Turnerbund in the Bundesliga, at the same time he coached the women of Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga from autumn 1970 (his wife was one of his players there). In 1972/73 he switched to the men's Bundesliga coaching position at HTB. He stayed at this post until 1973, and in 1975 he was again HTB trainer. He led the team back to the Bundesliga in 1979 and should have looked after them in the first division, but passed the position on to Dietfried Kienast after he sustained a serious knee injury on a skiing holiday. In the 1980s he coached VfL Pinneberg (Regionalliga), Eidelstedter SV and was assistant coach of the BC Johanneum Hamburg in the 1990s and early 2000s and for a short time (1998 after Heiner Zarnack's resignation and 1999 after the separation from Tim Butler ) also works as an interim trainer.

In 1969, Konrad Paschen brought him to the University of Hamburg's sports institute as a research assistant and, because of his services, was later promoted to university lecturer for sports science in the field of exercise and training. He held the professorship from 1998 to 2005. Niedlich was the author and co-author of several books on basketball, including standard works like The Basketball Handbook and 100 Tactical Drills in Basketball . In 1993 he published the baseball manual .
