Gerhard Schmidt (sports scientist)

Gerhard Jürgen Schmidt (* 1942 in Liegnitz ) is a German sports scientist , university professor , author of textbooks and basketball coach .

Life

Schmidt completed his school education in Seesen in 1961 with the Abitur , until 1964 he studied at the Pedagogical University in Alfeld , in 1964 he began studying to be a qualified sports teacher at the German Sport University Cologne , but from 1965 initially worked as a teacher at the Volkshochschule Vörden for three years before resuming sports studies and graduating in 1970.

In 1970 and 1971 Schmidt held a position as a sports teacher at the Carl-Duisberg-Gymnasium in Leverkusen , in 1971 he switched to the Institute for Sports Games at the German Sport University Cologne, where he was promoted to a lecturer in 1975 and a teacher for special tasks in 1987 . From 1974 the licensed basketball trainer at the sports university was a technical spokesman in the sports field of basketball, between 1979 and 1982 he was chairman of the research committee of the institute for sports games. In 1987 Schmidt completed his doctoral thesis at the sports university (title: "Perception and reaction performance of sports players. An experimental study based on action psychology"). In addition to his duties at the university, he was a member of the respective teaching and examination committees at the German Basketball Federation and the West German Basketball Association . As assistant coach at TuS 04 Leverkusen in 1971 and 1972, Schmidt was involved in  winning the German basketball championship, and as the coach in charge of the Leverkusen club, he led the female offspring of the Leverkusen club to win the German A youth championship in 1975. He also trained the women of TuS 04 Leverkusen as head coach, who under his leadership became German runner-ups in 1975 and reached the cup final and German cup winners in 1976. Later he looked after the Bundesliga women of the BSC Saturn Cologne , who became German vice-cup winners in 1986 with Schmidt as coach. Furthermore, he led several teams to win the German university championship.

In his scientific work he also dealt with the sport of basketball, headed among other things the research projects "Selected analyzes of technical and tactical aspects in top basketball" (1992 to 1994), "Analyzes of defense and attack tactics in top European basketball" ( 1994 to 1996), "Talent search and promotion of talent in basketball through the Bahn-Basketball-Akademie", "Quantitative data acquisition in German high-performance basketball - possibilities and limits" (2001 to 2004) and "On the problem of fouls and the cause of escalations in basketball" (2003 / 04). He dealt extensively with sports game observation as well as technical and tactical aspects of basketball. In 1974 Schmidt, together with Günter Hagedorn and Hans-Dieter Niedlich  , published the first edition of the basketball manual , which was the basis of the official textbook of the German Basketball Association of the same name later published by the three sports scientists.
