history
Foundation and Karl Adams Germany eighth

The founding of the association in 1953 is largely due to the involvement of the rowing trainer Karl Adam, who was a teacher at the Lauenburg School of Academics in Ratzeburg after the Second World War . There he trained the rower Claus von Fersen in the rowing team of the school , who was not allowed to participate in rowing regattas due to the lack of membership of his school rowing team in the German Rowing Association . The association was therefore founded on March 20, 1953 in the Ratzeburg hotel "Stadt Hamburg" in the presence of 21 people. Alfred Block was elected first chairman. In 1955 and 1956, the club built its boathouse .
The Ratzeburg rowing club was the city's first rowing club, but with the expertise of Karl Adam and a few rowers, the basis for sporting success was already in place. As early as 1955, the first two titles in the German championship rowing in Berlin-Grünau were won by Klaus von Fersen in a single and by von Fersen and Manfred Rulffs in a double scull . In 1958, only five years after the club was founded, the same team achieved their first championship title in the men's eighth and fifth place at the European Rowing Championships in Poznan. Karl Adam developed the first successful phase of the Germany eight from the team , which lasted until around 1968 and led, among other things, to two Olympic victories (1960 and 1968) with significant involvement of rowers from the RRC. The Ratzeburg eight-team was elected Team of the Year for the Federal Republic of Germany in 1959, 1960, 1962 and 1968 .
In the course of the successful series of the Ratzeburg rowing club, the rowing academy in Ratzeburg, which still exists today, was founded by Karl Adam in 1966. Until his death in 1976 Adam ran the academy himself. After the Olympic victory in 1968 Adam Eighth were not as successful as before, and the first phase of success of the RRC came to an end.
Sporting successes after the fall of the Berlin Wall
After a lean spell of around 20 years, the club found its way back to success after reunification. First, Kai von Warburg won a world championship gold medal in the lightweight double scull in 1991. For the 1995 season, the two-time Olympic champion Thomas Lange from Halle moved to the RRC, for which he won a final bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta . Between 1997 and 2004, Meike Evers , Marita Scholz and Marco Geisler in particular were internationally successful for the club in the large skull boats for men and women: Evers won two world titles and two Olympic gold medals, Scholz two world titles and Marco Geisler participated four world titles for men. From 2007 the RRC member Florian Mennigen rowed internationally, with the Germany eighth three world titles between 2009 and 2011 and the Olympic victory in London 2012 .
Ratzeburg rowing regatta
The development of the Ratzeburg rowing regatta, which the club has held annually on Lake Küchensee since 1957, was just as steep as the success story of the club itself . Due to the presence of the popular Germany eight, the regatta attracted numerous spectators, for example in 1965 when Adams eighth competed with the Olympic team from the Vesper Boat Club from the USA. Since the regatta course was regularly expanded and modernized with the Albano system , start system and finish tower, the RRC was able to host several championship competitions on it: the junior world championships in rowing in 1967 and 1974 and the German championship rowing in 1984, apart from that, one is held annually Regatta over the Olympic track length of 2000 m mostly held at the beginning of June. The class of the starting field depends on the integration in the regatta calendar and therefore fluctuates.
