Azdavay is a city and capital of the district of the same name in the province of Kastamonu in northern Turkey. The city is located in the hinterland of the Black Sea coast in the Küre Dağları mountain range , about 48 km northwest of the provincial capital Kastamonu . Road connections lead from Azdavay to the neighboring district towns. In 1946 the place was raised to Belediye (municipality).

The district, formed in 1946, is located in the western center of the province and borders on the Pınarbaşı district in the west, the Cide and Şenpazar districts in the northwest, the Doğanyurt district in the north, the Küre and Ağlı districts in the east and finally the Daday district in the south . The river Devrekani Çayı flows through the district and the city in a predominantly northwestern direction.

In addition to the district town (2018: 43.6% of the district's population), the district consists of 49 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 89 residents. The population is between 183 ( Çoçukören ) and 15 ( Kayabaşı ). The district is populated below average, its population density reaches just a third of the provincial average of 29 inhabitants per km².
