Hanönü is a town and capital of the district of the same name in the east of the Turkish province of Kastamonu in northern Anatolia . Hanönü is located about 60 km east-northeast of the provincial town of Kastamonu on the north bank of the Gökırmak River .
The district is located in the east of the province and borders on Taşköprü County in the west , the other borders form three counties of Sinop Province . The district was formed in 1990 from a few villages from Bucak Gökçeağaç (Taşköprü district) and at the end of 2018 consisted of the district town (51.3% of the district's population) and 20 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 101 residents. The population ranges from 161 ( Küreçayı ) to 44 ( Yukarıçakırçay ). The district has the lowest population density in the province (10 inhabitants per km²).
The D030 trunk road between Taşköprü and Boyabat runs in a west-east direction through the district and past the city of Hanönü.
