Boyabat is a Turkish city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Turkish province of Sinop in northern Anatolia . The small town is located in the Black Sea region of Karadeniz bölgesi and is an economic center for the surrounding villages. According to the city seal, the place was raised to Belediye (municipality) in 1868 .

Boyabat is located on the western edge of the Gökırmak valley on the Gazi Deresi, a small river that joins the Gökırmak a few kilometers to the east. A castle, well-preserved in its outer walls, towers over a narrow opening of Gazi Deresi on a steep rocky nose to the northwest. The city center and bus station are not far from the river.

The history of the region goes back to 3000 BC. BC back. The district lost parts of its territory when the districts of Kargı (1936, Çorum Province ), Durağan (1955) and Saraydüzü (1990) were split off. In 1927 the district population was 60,116, in 1950 73,577, in 1990 50,547.

The county is the largest in the province and has the second largest population of all nine counties. In addition to the district town (62.3% of the district population), it consists of 107 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 157 inhabitants. Sarıağaççayı (1,862) and Yeşilyurt (1,710) are the largest villages, Aşağıseyricek with 11 inhabitants is also the smallest village in the province. 35 villages have 157 or more inhabitants.

traffic

The city lies at the intersection of two highways: the D030 ( Karabük - Kastamonu - Amasya ) running in a northwest-southeast direction and the D785 trunk road running in a northeast-southwest direction. This runs from Gerze (53 km away) via Boyabat in pieces to central Kırşehir and is said to have been part of the Silk Road . To the north, the D785 meets the “Black Sea Coastal Road” ( Karadeniz Sahil Yolu ) D010, south of the city of Sinop .
