Ayancık is a Turkish coastal city on the Black Sea and the capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Sinop province . The city is about 57 kilometers by road (as the crow flies: 48 km) west of the provincial capital Sinop on the D010 highway. In the city the river of the same name flows into the Black Sea. According to the city seal, the place received the status of a Belediye (municipality) in 1863 .

The district is located in the north of the province and borders on the district of Türkeli in the west, the districts of Hanönü (province of Kastamonu ) and Boyabat in the south and the district of Erfelek in the east. The D010 trunk road runs parallel to the Black Sea coast through the district and the district town. The third most populous district consists of the district town of 71 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 148 inhabitants. The population numbers range from 477 ( Aşağıköy ) down to 19 ( Ömerdüz ). 24 of the villages have more than 148 (= average) inhabitants. The population density is below the provincial average (38.4 inhabitants per km²).
