The district is located in the north of the province on the Black Sea . The Karasu River flows from southwest to northeast through the district and the city, it flows into the Black Sea at Sinop. It is dammed up to Erfelek Barajı on the western border with Ayancık County . The southeastern border to the central circle forms the
Sazlı Çay (later Kabalı Çay ), which also flows further east into the Black Sea.
In the south of the district are the foothills of the Küre Dağları Mountains with the 1215 meter high Soğukoluk Tepesi, in the north the coastal plain.
