System Development Corporation
The System Development Corporation (SDC) is considered to be the first software manufacturer worldwide.
SDC was founded in 1955 as an internal development group as part of the development of the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) air defense system . It should do programming work for the extensive software requirements of the computer systems of the highly networked defense system. The importance for the future computer development of the USA was enormous, because many programmers founded their own companies after they left SAGE and took the way of programming software with them. In 1957, the RAND Corporation spun off the group as a non-profit organization that was supposed to provide the US military with computer expertise. In 1969 SDC was transformed into a profit-oriented company, sold to Burroughs Corporation in 1980. Today it is a subsidiary ofL-3 Communications .
