Durağan is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Turkish province of Sinop . The place is about 70 kilometers south of the provincial capital Sinop . On March 10, 1955, Durağan was raised to Belediye (municipality).

The district is located in the southeast of the province. It is bordered by Saraydüzü and Boyabat counties in the west , Dikmen county in the north, and Samsun province in the east and south . In the southwest, the D030 trunk road crosses the city and the district, which runs from Karabük in the west to Taşova in the southeast. In addition, the city is connected by country roads in the north with Dikmen, in the southwest with Saraydüzü and in the northeast with Alaçam in the province of Samsun.

The Kızılırmak flows along the southern border with the province of Samsun and is dammed up to the Altınkaya Barajı reservoir. In the southwest, part of the Boyabat Barajı extends into the district. The Gökırmak flows from the west, through Durağan and ends about five kilometers east of it in the Kızılırmak. About seven kilometers west of the city, the Asarcık Çayı flows into the Gökırmak from the southwest .

The eastern part of the Küre Dağları Mountains stretches through the district with the elevations Kunduzçal Tepesi (1116 meters) and Kara Tepe (1040 meters) in the east and Soyuk Tepesi (1456 meters) in the north.

The county was formed in 1954 from the eastern part of Boyabat County. In addition to the district town, it consists of 70 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 175 inhabitants. The population numbers range from 817 ( Güngören ) to 41 ( Çaltucak ). 22 villages have more than 175 (= average) inhabitants. The village of Yandak has been a mahalle of the county seat since 2018. The population density of the district is 19.7 inh. Per km², which corresponds to about half of the province's value (of 38.4).
