Türkeli is a small town and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Turkish province of Sinop . The city is about 91 kilometers by road (air line: 70 km) west of Sinop on the Black Sea . The place was first called Yarna, from 1928 Gemiyanı and from 1957 Türkeli ("Turk's Country"). The name was changed to Türkeli at the personal suggestion of Adnan Menderes .

Türkeli County was separated from the western part of Ayancık County on May 1, 1957 . Türkeli borders this district in the east, and the province of Kastamonu forms the border in the south and west . In addition to the district town, the district consists of 33 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 353 inhabitants. Direkli (923), Sarmaşık (902), Güzelkent (842) and Kayabaşı (750) are the largest villages, twelve villages have more than 353 (= average) inhabitants.

The population density is higher than that of the province, the urban population of the district is 35.05 percent.
