Live and act

Athletic career

Armin Eichholz rowed for the rowing club Blankenstein / Ruhr until 1988 and from 1991 for the rowing club Hansa from 1898 in Dortmund. In 1979 Eichholz began rowing, in 1985 he took part in the rowing world championships for the first time and took seventh place with the four with a helmsman . In 1986 and 1987 Eichholz was eighth and, in contrast to 1985, reached the world championship finals, but only finished sixth there. When coach Ralf Holtmeyer re-formed the Germany eighth for the Olympic Games in Seoul, the 2.04 meter tall Eichholz stayed in the boat. In the line-up of Wolfgang Maennig , Thomas Möllenkamp , Matthias Mellinghaus , Eckhardt Schultz , Ansgar Wessling , Armin Eichholz, Thomas Domian , Schlagmann Bahne Rabe and helmsman Manfred Klein , the eighth won gold in Seoul.

After a long break, during which he concentrated on his studies (see below), Eichholz returned to competitive sports in 1991 and rowed with Matthias Ungemach , Armin Weyrauch , Bahne Rabe and helmsman Thomas Alt in a four-man with helmsman. With Eichholz and Rabe, the two longest rowers from the Germany eighth in 1988 were in the boat, but it was still surprising that the two became German champions straight away after a two-year break from competition. With helmsman Jörg Dederding instead of Thomas Alt, the boat won the new world record title at the World Championships in Vienna , which is still in place today (as of 2017). For the 1992 Olympic Games , Rabe and Eichholz returned to the Germany eighth, which had become world champions three times in a row with alternating line-up. In Barcelona, Germany eighth won bronze behind Canada and Romania.

For his sporting successes he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993 .

Professional career

Parallel to his sporting career, Eichholz completed a mechanical engineering degree from 1984 to 1990 with a focus on energy and process engineering at the Ruhr University in Bochum . He then continued to work part-time as an assistant at the Ruhr University. In 1995, three years after the end of his sporting career, he earned his doctorate there to the Dr. Ing.

Eichholz started his career at the United Electricity Works Westphalia (VEW), which merged with RWE in 2000 . Eichholz soon rose to a leading position there; at the age of only 35 he became head of the hard coal power plant in Westphalia , later he took over the management of the lignite power plant Niederaussem . From 2010 he was overall head of the lignite division of RWE Power .

On July 1, 2016, Eichholz moved to MIBRAG , where he took over the position of Chairman of the Management Board.

Private life

Armin Eichholz is married, has three children and lives with his family in Witten . His daughter Julia and son Jonas are also successful rowers.
