List of world best times in rowing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of the world's best times in rowing . In rowing , the World Rowing Association maintains world record times instead of world records, as the times that can be achieved depend heavily on external influences and therefore only give a limited indication of the performance of the rowers.

Dependency on the world's best times

Since the world best times in rowing are highly dependent on external influences, they are not called world records , as was done until the mid- 1950s .

You are u. a. depending on wind, water depth, temperature and quality, current, undercurrent and waves. Therefore, they can only be reached under favorable weather conditions. Best times are achieved with continuous wind (approx. 3 to 7 m / s), no significantly disturbing waves and warm water (approx. 20 ° C or more). If there is too much wind, the waves are too big, which disturb and slow down the boat speed (e.g. the regatta course in Oberschleißheim , where the wind usually comes from the side or from the starting system). The current also makes the boat faster, and countercurrent makes it slower. At the 2005 World Championships in Gifu , Japan , the records fell by the dozen, but were not recognized by FISA because the current was too strong.

The conditions on a regatta course do not always have to be favorable. During the U23 World Rowing Championships in 2011 on the Bosbaan in Amsterdam , almost all world best times were undercut. This was also due to the fact that the weather conditions were very favorable on both final days.

In a gender comparison, the world best times in all competitive classes differ by around 10%. This difference in performance can also be found in many other sports.

World best times

The world best times in the open performance classes for women and men relate to the Olympic competition distance of 2000 meters.
