Olena Swjatoslawiwna Buryak ( Ukrainian Олена Святославівна Буряк ; born February 8, 1988 in Mykolaiv , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian rower . In 2010 she became European champion in the double foursome and took part in the 2012 Summer Olympics for Ukraine as well as numerous world rowing championships .

Career

Burjak began rowing in 1998. At the age of 16, she took part in the 2004 junior world championships and won a silver medal in the quadruple sculls. In 2006 and 2007 Burjak was already used in the open age group at the Rowing World Cup and the World Championships in double sculls, but she did not win any medals. However, she was still eligible to start in the U23 age group and achieved fourth place in the double sculls in 2007 in the double sculls and a gold medal in the quad sculls in 2009.

After 2009, Burjak only started in the open age group. 2009 and 2011 took Skullerin while a trip to the belt disciplines , launched with the Ukrainian women's roller in international competitions, winning two European bronze medals. In between, in 2010 she qualified for the Ukrainian top sculling boat, the double foursome. Together with Anastassija Koschenkowa , Kateryna Tarassenko and Jana Dementjewa , Olena Burjak became European and Vice World Champion. However, she slipped out of the double foursome, which later won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games. With Hanna Kravchenko she started in the double scull in London and finished tenth and last place in this boat class.

In the new Olympic cycle from 2012 Burjak started regularly for the Ukraine at European Rowing Championships and World Rowing World Championships in sculling boats. Between 2012 and 2014, she regularly ranked 6th to 10th, but did not win any medals. At the European Championships in 2016 she won the bronze medal with the double scull. In the final of the 2016 Olympic Games , the Ukrainian double scull with Daryna Verkhohljad , Olena Burjak, Anastassija Koshenkowa , and Yevhenija Nimtschenko took fourth place.

After a weaker year in 2017, the Ukrainian double scull won the silver medal behind the Polish women at the 2018 European Championships with Daryna Verkhohljad, Olena Burjak, Anastassija Koschenkowa and Ievgeniia Dovhodko .

On January 31, 2015, Burjak rowed a new world record on the Concept2 rowing ergometer at the European Indoor Rowing Championships in Szczecin with a time of 6: 25.0 min over the distance of 2000 m . At the World Games 2017 she improved her world record to a time of 6: 22.8 minutes and also won the 500 m open weight class.

Burjak starts for the Spartak Kiev club . At a height of 1.94 m, her competition weight is around 88 kg.
