Ursula Grobler

Ursula Grobler (* 6. February 1980 in Pretoria ) is a South African lightweight - rower . Together with Kirsten McCann , she became the first woman rower to win a medal at the World Rowing Championships in South Africa.

Athletic career

As a teenager, Ursula Grobler was active as a track and field athlete and triathlete. In 1996 she won a bronze medal with the junior triathlon team at the All Africa Games. She graduated from the University of Pretoria in 2002 and then moved to Seattle, United States as a graphic designer. There she started rowing with the Green Lake Crew in 2003 . Her first participation in the Rowing World Cup took place in Banyoles in 2009 when she and Teresa Mas de Xaxars Rivero took second place in the Spanish lightweight double scull .

From 2010 to 2012 Ursula Grobler was a member of the US national team. At the 2010 World Championships , she won the silver medal in the lightweight quadruple scull with Victoria Burke , Kristin Hedstrom and Abelyn Broughton . At the World Championships in 2011 and 2012 , she finished fourth in the lightweight single .

Ursula Grobler has been rowing internationally for South Africa since 2013, and at the 2013 World Championships she finished fifth in the lightweight single. In 2014 Ursula Grobler joined Kerstin McCann in the lightweight double scull, the two South Africans took fourth place at the World Championships in Amsterdam . After a second place at the World Cup in Lucerne, Kirsten McCann and Ursula Grobler received the bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships on Lac d'Aiguebelette behind the New Zealanders Sophie MacKenzie and Julia Edward and the Britons Charlotte Taylor and Katherine Copeland . The following year, Grobler and McCann finished fifth at the 2016 Olympic Games .
