Kirsten McCann

Kirsten McCann (* 25. August 1988 ) is a South African lightweight - rower . Together with Ursula Grobler , she became the first South African rower to win a medal at the World Rowing Championships .

Athletic career

Kirsten McCann started rowing in 2001. At the Junior World Championships in 2005, she finished sixth in a double scull, in 2006 she was fourth in a single . In 2007 Kirsten McCann competed in the World Cup for the first time and together with Alex White finished 16th in the lightweight double scull in Linz. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics , McCann and White finished 14th. In 2010 Kirsten McCann won the bronze medal in the lightweight single at the U23 World Championships .

After a long break, Kirsten McCann competed at the 2013 World Championships together with Kate Johnstone in the lightweight double scull and finished eighth. In 2014, Ursula Grobler joined McCann in the lightweight double sculls, the two South Africans took fourth place at the World Championships in Amsterdam . In 2015, Kirsten McCann reached an A-final in the World Cup for the first time in her career and, together with Grobler, took second place in Lucerne. At the 2015 World Championships on Lac d'Aiguebelette, New Zealanders Sophie MacKenzie and Julia Edward won ahead of Britons Charlotte Taylor and Katherine Copeland , followed by Kirsten McCann and Ursula Grobler who won the bronze medal. The following year, Grobler and McCann finished fifth at the 2016 Olympic Games .

In 2017 McCann rowed successfully in the lightweight single. She won the gold medal at the Rowing World Cup in Lucerne and at the World Championships in Florida.
