Constanța Burcică (born March 15, 1971 in Sohatu , Călărași County as Constanța Pipotă ) is a former Romanian rower . She is a three-time Olympic champion in the lightweight double scull , in total she was able to win five Olympic medals and five world championships in her career. This makes her one of the most successful rowers of all time.

Burcică, who belonged to the Dinamo Bucharest sports club , started rowing at the age of 14. She studied sport at the University of George Bacovia Bacau . At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , she won the silver medal in a double foursome. She tried to establish herself in the one , but did not get past eleventh place at the 1995 World Championships in Tampere .

She then switched to the first ever Olympic lightweight double scull and became Olympic champion in Atlanta in 1996 together with Camelia Macoviciuc . In the same year she also became world champion in the lightweight single. In 1999 she won in St. Catharines with Macoviciuc in double sculls at the World Championships. The new rowing partner Angela Alupei she could in 2000 in Sydney repeat the Olympic victory.

Together with Camelia Mihalcea , she was third at the 2003 World Championships in Milan . In 2004 in Athens she won the Olympic race for the third time in a row, this time again with Angela Alupei. Then she switched to the Romanian eighth . In 2008 Burcică won her last Olympic medal, a bronze, with the Romanian eighth. In September 2008 she defended the title at the European Championships with the Romanian eighth and then withdrew from active competitive sport.

Awards

In August 2008, Constanța Burcică received the Order of Merit “Meritul sportiv” III from President Traian Băsescu . Class with two stripes.
