Maria Elisabetta Sancassani (born February 6, 1983 in Lecco ) is a former Italian rower who won a world title and three European titles.

Athletic career

Sancassani began rowing in 1995. In 2001 she won the bronze medal in double sculls at the Junior World Championships . In 2002 she rowed with Gabriella Bascelli and won the title at the U23 World Championships in Genoa. A month and a half later, the two competed at the World Championships in Seville and won the bronze medal behind the boats from New Zealand and Russia. In 2003 the World Championships took place in front of a home crowd in Milan, Bascelli and Sancassani took fifth place. In 2004, the two reached eighth place at the Olympic Games in Athens .

2005 Sancassini joined the Mediterranean Games in Almeria in one and won the competition with seven hundredths of a second ahead of Frenchwoman Caroline Delas . Four weeks later, Laura Schiavone and Elisabetta Sancassani won the U23 World Championships in a double scull. At the 2005 World Championships , the two Italians finished sixth. In 2006 Schiavone and Sancassani were tenth at the World Championships in Eton , followed by seventh place at the World Championships in Munich in 2007 . At the end of the 2007 season, the two rowed to fifth place at the European Championships in Poznan . Schiavone and Sancassani also competed together at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and finished in tenth place.

In 2009 Schiavone and Sancassani finished second in the Rowing World Cup in Banyoles. For the World Championships in Poznan they switched to the double scull . Erika Bello , Gabriella Bascelli, Laura Schiavone and Elisabetta Sancassani finished fourth, 3.7 seconds behind the third-placed Germans. At the European Championships in 2009, the Italians won the silver medal behind the Ukrainians. At the Mediterranean Games in Pescara in 2009, the Spaniard Nuria Domínguez won in the single in front of Elisabetta Sancassani. In 2010 Sancassani competed in two boat classes at the European Championships in Montemor . In the double scull she won the bronze medal together with Laura Schiavone. Together with Elena Coletti and Giada Colombo , the two finished fifth in the double fours . At the 2010 World Championships , Schiavone and Sancassani only competed in double sculls and finished in tenth place. The following year, Valentina Calabrese , Giada Colombo, Schiavone and Sancassani rowed in double fours to ninth place at the 2011 World Championships . At the European Championships 2011 Schiavone and Sancassani reached fourth place. In 2012, Sancassani tried to qualify for the Olympic Games in a single, but was eliminated in the repechage.

Then Sancassani switched to lightweight rowing. After she had finished seventh in the lightweight single at the World Championships in 2012 in the non-Olympic boat classes, she won the title at the European Championships in Varese together with Laura Milani . The two defended this title at the 2013 European Championships , also won the 2013 World Cup in Lucerne and at the end of the season they won the title at the 2013 World Championships in Chungju . In 2014 Milani and Sancassani won their third consecutive European title , and they both finished sixth at the World Championships .

Elisabetta Sancassani competed at least temporarily for Fiamme Gialle , the sports department of the Guardia di Finanza . Her brother Franco Sancassani also took part in Olympic rowing competitions.
