Rebecca Joyce

Rebecca Susan Joyce (* 12. September 1970 in Melbourne ) is a former Australian Lightweight - rower .

Rebecca Joyce rowed for the Mercantile Boat Club in Melbourne until 1990 and then for the Melbourne University Boat Club until 1994 . In 1994 she moved to Sydney and joined the UTS Haberfield Rowing Club , where she trained with Ellen Randall.

Rebecca Joyce made her first international appearance at the 1989 World Championships when she finished fourth with the lightweight four-man without a helmsman . In the 1990 World Championships in Tasmania, Amanda Cross , Rebecca Joyce, Sally Ninham and Pamela Westendorf-Marshall won the silver medal behind the Canadian boat. In 1991 Rebecca Joyce competed in two boat classes at the World Championships in Vienna . With the lightweight four, she finished fifth, the Australian eight came in twelfth place.

The announcement that the lightweight double scull would be included in the Olympic program in 1996 brought Rebecca Joyce back to competitive sport. At the 1995 World Championships in Tampere, Finland, she won the race in the lightweight single . In 1996 she competed with Virginia Lee at the Atlanta Olympics and won the bronze medal behind the boats from Romania and the United States. In 1998 Joyce finished fifth again with Josephine Lips at the World Championships in Cologne .

Rebecca Joyce served on the board of the Australian Rowing Federation for many years. Her father, James Robert Joyce, was a track and field athlete at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.
