Doina Liliana Bălan , from 1990 Doina Liliana Șnep , (born December 10, 1963 in Liteni ) is a former Romanian rower who won four Olympic medals and seven world championship medals, including four world championship titles.

Athletic career

The 1.75 m tall Doina Bălan won the silver medal behind the US boat at the 1984 Olympic Games with the Romanian eighth . At the 1985 World Championships , the Soviet eighth won ahead of the GDR boat, both boats were not at the start in 1984 because of the Olympic boycott . The Romanians won the 1985 World Championship bronze in front of the US eight. In 1986 Doina Bălan switched to the four with helmswoman and won her first world title at the World Championships in Nottingham .

At the Olympic Games in 1988 Bălan rowed in two boat classes: In the four-man the GDR won over China, the Romanian four-man won the bronze medal; in the eighth, the Romanians received the silver medal behind the eighth from the GDR. At the 1989 World Championships , she and Marioara Curelea won the silver medal in two with a helmsman behind the boat from the GDR, and with the Romanian eighth she won the title.

The following year she won, now as Doina Șnep, at the World Championships in Tasmania, her third and fourth world championship titles in the four without helmsman and in the eight. At the 1991 World Championships , Șnep competed in two boat classes, with the eighth she won the bronze medal, in the uncontrolled four she took sixth place. In 1992 Doina Șnep started for the third time at the Olympic Games. At the Olympic regatta in Barcelona she won her third silver medal with the eighth, together with Doina Robu she finished seventh with the uncontrolled two.
