Lianne Nelson

Lianne Nelson (born Lianne Bennion on June 15, 1972 in Houston ) is a former rower from the United States . She was world champion in 1995 and Olympic runner-up in 2004.

Athletic career

Lianne Bennion started rowing in 1988. In 1990 she was eighth and fifth at the Junior World Championships . In July 1994 she won the Nations Cup, a forerunner to the U23 World Championships, with the four-man without a helmsman . In September 1994 at the World Championships in Indianapolis , she entered in two without a helmsman and finished sixth. 1995 in the World Championships in Tampere won Melissa Iverson , Cindy Brooks , Lianne Bennion and Katie Scanlon before the Germans and the White Russians.

In 1998 she returned to the regatta courses as Lianne Nelson. In the Rowing World Cup , she took second place in a two-man without a helmsman in Munich and a second place in eighth in Lucerne. At the World Championships in Cologne , she won the silver medal in eighth place. In 1999 she competed at the World Championships in St. Catharines in two without a helmsman and took seventh place. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, she reached the A final with eighth and finished sixth.

After a second break in her international career, Lianne Nelson took part in the 2003 World Championships in Milan in two without a helmsman and finished in sixth place. In 2004 she won the World Cup regattas in Munich and Lucerne with the eighth. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , eighth with Katherine Johnson , Samantha Magee , Megan Dirkmaat , Alison Cox , Anna Mickelson , Laurel Korholz , Caryn Davies , Lianne Nelson and helmsman Mary Whipple won the silver medal, 1.86 seconds behind the Romanians and 0.29 seconds ahead of the third-placed Dutch women.
