Rumjana Dimitrova Nejkowa , b. Dschadscharowa ( Bulgarian Румяна Димитрова Нейкова (Джаджарова) , Translit. Rumyana Dimitrova Nejkova ( Džadžarova ), English also Rumyana Neykova written * 6. April 1973 in Sofia ) is a former Bulgarian rower and Olympic champion in 2008 in one . She is married to her trainer Swilen Nejkow , with whom she has two sons.

Life

In 1990 she finished second at the Junior World Championships in Singles, and in 1991 she won the title. At the 1992 Olympic Games , she finished ninth with the Bulgarian double foursome. In the following years she returned to the One. After marrying her coach Swilen Nejkow, she entered the 1996 Olympic Games as Rumjana Nejkowa and took eighth place in the one. In 1997 she reached the finals of the world championships for the first time in the adult class and placed fourth. After another fourth place in 1998, she rowed into the medal ranks in 1999 and received bronze at the world championships. In the following year, she fought at the Olympic Games in Sydney to the finish line with the Belarusian Ekaterina Karsten for the Olympic victory, only after the photo finish was decided by the jury with Karsten before Nejkowa. In 2001 Nejkowa took a break and gave birth to a son.

She returned in 2002 and won her first world title, which she successfully defended in 2003. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens she received the bronze medal behind Katrin Rutschow-Stomporowski and Ekaterina Karsten. In 2005 she competed with Miglena Markowa in double sculls and won silver at the World Championships in Gifu. After a break in 2006 Nejkowa returned in 2007 in the single, at the 2007 World Rowing Championships she took second place behind Karsten, at the European Championships she won the title. Nejkowa achieved the greatest success of her career at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, winning the final ahead of the American Michelle Guerette and her long-time rival Ekaterina Karsten.
