Irina Ivanovna Fetissowa ( Russian Ирина Ивановна Фетисова ; married name Russian Ирина Пименова / Irina Pimenowa; born October 30, 1956 in Leningrad , Russian SFSR ) is a former Soviet swimmer and rower .

Career

Fetissowa was initially active in swimming for SKA Leningrad and trained under the coach Genrich Jarozki . From 1970 she was a member of the Soviet national team. She was particularly successful in 1974 when she became the Soviet champion in the 100-meter breaststroke discipline and won the bronze medal at the 1974 European championships over 200-meter medley in a national record. After the 1976 season, she ended her swimming career and switched to rowing.

In the following year she was a member of the Soviet national rowing team. At the 1977 World Championships , she finished fifth in the double fours with helmswoman. From 1981 Fetissowa rowed in one of the world's best. At the 1981 World Championships , she won the bronze medal behind Sanda Toma and Beryl Mitchell . The following year she succeeded in winning the world title with a lead of nine hundredths of a second over the Romanian Valeria Răcilă . At the world championships in 1983 she won silver behind Jutta Behrendt from the GDR.

She missed participation in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles due to the boycott by the Eastern Bloc countries. In the alternate friendship competitions, she won a gold medal in a controlled quadruple scull. In 1984 Fetissova also ended her career as a rower. In rowing, she won a total of four Soviet championship titles - 1977 and 1984 in the controlled quadruple, and 1981 and 1983 in the single.

Fetissowa received the Soviet Union Medal of Honor in 1985 for her services in rowing.
