Silken Laumann

Silken Suzette Laumann (born November 14, 1964 in Mississauga ) is a former Canadian rowing athlete .

Life

Laumann, the daughter of German emigrants, began rowing in 1976 and together with her sister Danièle won the bronze medal in the double scull at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . After the games in Seoul in 1988 , she switched to the one and became vice world champion in 1990 and world champion in Vienna in 1991 .

Two months before the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , she took part in a regatta in Essen and was rammed by Colin von Ettingshausen and Peter Hoeltzenbein's boat shortly before the start . She suffered a broken tibia and severe muscle injuries, and had five operations in the following weeks. At the end of June she resumed training in a boat specially designed for her and won the bronze medal in Barcelona. It carried the Canadian flag at the closing ceremony and four years later won the silver medal at the Atlanta Games .

In 1999 Silken Laumann and Kathleen Heddle were awarded the Thomas Keller Medal by the FISA World Rowing Association.

Silken Laumann works as a journalist and writer in Victoria , British Columbia .
