Sanda Toma
Sanda Toma (after marriage to Sanda Urichianu ; born February 24, 1956 in Ștefăneşti , Botoşani district ) is a former Romanian rower. She won Olympic gold in one in 1980 .
Sanda Toma won her first big title at the Rowing World Championships in Bled in 1979 when she won the gold medal in singles ahead of Martina Schröter from the GDR and Hette Borrias from the Netherlands.
At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, a total of eleven rowers were at the start, six of them from the Eastern Bloc. Only the Hungarian Mariann Ambrus did not reach the final, the British Beryl Mitchell entered the final as the only rowing woman from the West. At the finish, Sanda Toma was one second ahead of Antonina Machina from the Soviet Union, Martina Schröter won the bronze medal two seconds behind.
Sanda Toma's winning streak continued in 1981. She won her second world championship title at the world championships on the Oberschleissheim regatta course near Munich, ahead of Beryl Mitchell and Irina Fetissowa from the Soviet Union.
