The Dorney Lake is an artificial, approximately rectangular lake in the county of Buckinghamshire in the United Kingdom , the specially for rowing regattas was created. It is in the village of Dorney near the towns of Eton and Windsor . The lake is owned by Eton College , which self-funded the entire £ 17 million construction cost and did not take taxpayers' money. Although the lake is mainly used by the rowers of the boarding school, it is also available to other rowers as well as canoeists , dragon boats and for triathlon training.
The lake complies with the FISA standards for category A regatta courses: calm waters with constant water conditions, a straight line 2000 meters in length for holding races, eight rowing lanes with a width of 13.5 meters each, water depth of at least 3.5 meters and a return channel for transports back to the start.
Construction began in 1996, the first major event was the Rowing World Cup in May 2005. Since then, other important regattas such as the Coupe de la Jeunesse in 2005 and the Rowing World Championships in 2006 have taken place here. In 2011 Dorney Lake hosted the Junior World Rowing Championships .
In the 2012 Olympics the Dorney Lake venue for the competitions in rowing and was canoe racing , and in the Paralympics in 2012 he was the venue for the competitions in rowing. Temporary stands for up to 30,000 spectators have been created for this purpose.
