The 1.52 m tall Dmytrenko moved into the Soviet eighth as helmsman in 1979 . He drove the eighth at the 1979 World Championships in Bled for the bronze medal behind the boats from the GDR and New Zealand. The following year the GDR eighth also won the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . Behind the British boat, the Soviet eight came third, with seven rowers from the previous year waiting in the Soviet boat.

In the next few years Dmytrenko was not at the start internationally. In 1986 in Nottingham , the Australian eight won ahead of the Soviet boat piloted by Dmytrenko. After he was not nominated for the 1988 Olympic Games , he stepped back in 1989 in the Soviet eighth and finished fifth at the World Championships in Bled .

Only after the collapse of the Soviet Union was Dmytrenko again at the international start in 1993, now as the helmsman of the Ukrainian figure eight, which took eighth place at the 1993 and 1995 World Championships . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , the now 51-year-old Dmytrenko took tenth place with eighth.
