Roland Baar (* 12. April 1965 in Osterholz-Scharmbeck ; † 23. June 2018 in Velpke ) was a German rowers and engineering - engineering .
Life
Baar was the batsman of the Germany eight from 1989 to 1996. He won the Olympic bronze in the eighth in 1992 and the Olympic silver in 1996. He was world champion in 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993 and 1995. In 1998 he was awarded the international Thomas Keller medal " for an outstanding career in rowing ”.
Roland Baar remained connected to the sport even after retiring from active competitive sport. He worked as an athlete representative in the athletes' commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and was an IOC member and a member of the NOK's presidium from 1999 to 2004 . Since 2005 he has worked on the IOC Commission for Sport and Environment. In 2008, he supported the ZDF moderation team as an expert at the Summer Olympics in Beijing. In 2012 he became the ombudsman of the National Anti-Doping Agency. For his services to sport in Lower Saxony , he was appointed to the gallery of honor of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History .
Roland Baar studied mechanical engineering and was awarded a Dr.-Ing. In 1996 with a thesis on investigations into the acceleration processes of particles in nozzles and jets at the Leibniz University of Hanover . PhD. He then worked in the automotive industry - initially at Volkswagen and since the end of 2006 at Voith AG , where he built up the business area for turbochargers and their research and development.
From 2001 to 2011 he was a lecturer at the Leibniz University in Hanover. At the beginning of 2009 he was appointed honorary professor there. In July 2011 he was appointed professor for the field of internal combustion engines at the TU Berlin .
Baar was an honorary member of the Hanoverian Rowing Club from 1880 and of the Osterholz-Scharmbeck rowing club from 1901 .
Roland Baar had been married since 1990. He lived with his wife Kathrin in Gifhorn and had two children. He died on June 23, 2018 in a car accident in Velpke .
