history

In 1160 the community was first mentioned as Vilebeke . A postal route ran through Velpke in the 18th and 19th centuries. For the development of the postal system, see: Braunschweig – Calvörde postal route .

From May 1 to December 14, 1944, a quarry, the so-called Wetzsteinkuhlen, was a death camp for children of foreign forced laborers, a so-called foreign child care facility. A total of 102 children were accommodated here. Those responsible in the NSDAP committees had not made it clear whether they wanted the children to survive. The appearance of actual nursing homes was created, and on the other hand, the unspoken purpose of allowing the unwanted children to die quickly was fulfilled.

In 1979 the new town hall was opened.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1972, the communities of Meinkot and Wahrstedt were incorporated.
