history

Local development

In the chronicle of the village of Räbke , Frellstedt is first mentioned in 827 as Gross and Klein Frellstedt.

Around 1725 the first lignite was probably found in the Duchy of Braunschweig at the "Red Mill" near Frellstedt. However, there was no dismantling at that time. It was not until much later that lignite was extracted on a large scale in the nearby Helmstedt district .

Until the opening of the Braunschweig – Helmstedt – Magdeburg railway on September 15, 1872 and the founding of the North German Sugar Refinery (NZR) in 1885, Frellstedt was a pure farming village.

The number of inhabitants doubled to 1020 by 1885 and Frellstedt today has a healthy infrastructure with a bakery, grocery store, kindergarten and a train connection every hour to the east and west of 897 inhabitants.

The village community center and the community's youth room are not only used extensively by the local population for all kinds of festivities.

The good quality of life includes the proximity to the Elm, the local recreation park of the municipality of Nord-Elm and the quiet location away from traffic.

Witch Trial 1578

There is a detailed witch trial against Gesche Fricke from Frellstedt from 1578. She was accused of only having to lubricate her stick to fly to Blocksberg transformed into a crow. According to tradition, she and her fellow accused were sentenced to death by fire by the gentlemen of the Helmstedt council and burned there.

At the end of 2018, in the course of road construction work on Helmstedter Strasse, a completely preserved billet dam made of oak beams was found at a depth of about two meters . Research by the community revealed that these were delivered and installed in 1790. Keeping the beams in a museum was not considered, but some are still privately owned and were also shown to the public in May 2019.
