Kent was a Swedish rock band from Eskilstuna , which had great success , especially in Scandinavia . Within 20 years it sold over 2.3 million records .
Band history
The band was formed in 1990 in Eskilstuna as Jones & Giftet ('Jones and the Gift') from the members Joakim Berg , Martin Sköld, Markus Mustonen, Sami Sirviö and Thomas Bergqvist. The latter was replaced by Martin Roos in 1992, the band changed their name to Havsänglar (' Sea Angel ').
In 1993 the band moved to Stockholm and called themselves Kent from then on. In 1995, the year the first Kent album was released , Harri Mänty replaced Martin Roos. A year later the band released Verkligen , which made it to number 1 on the Swedish album charts. This also resulted in the first top ten single, Kräm .
Between alternative rock and pop rock - ascent and mass success
After a tour, Isola , the third studio album, was released in 1997 . The last track on this album 747 , which lasts exactly 7:47 minutes, is still one of the most popular tracks among fans today. Due to its growing popularity, Kent decided to release the album internationally in English and to tour the US . However, there was no success. The next album Hagnesta Hill (1999) was again a great success in their homeland, the English version of the album and the US tour were again a flop.
After releasing a double CD with all B-sides since the start of their career ( B-Sidor 95-00 ), the band released the album Vapen & Ammunition in 2002 . With seven weeks at number 1 in the album charts and the first number 1 single ( Dom andra ), this record, which sold over 600,000 times, became the most successful in the band's history. The plans for an English version of the album were discarded due to the experience with the last two studio albums. The band gave a single concert in 2003, which attracted around 30,000 fans to the Stockholm stadium.
In 2005 the album Du & jag döden was released . The producer was Stefan Boman , with whom Kent shares her studio in Älsvjö . The album stayed at the top of the charts for several weeks and included two No. 1 singles ( Max 500 and Palace & Main ). In the autumn of the same year The Hjärta & Smärta EP was released and reached number 1 in the single charts. This EP contained five tracks, including the radio hit Dom som försvann , for which a video was made that won a national award.
Style change to electro rock - new generation of fans
On the occasion of a television documentary about abused children, the band released a song specially written for this topic in the spring of 2006, entitled Nålens öga , which can be purchased for a small donation. Half a year later, the band announced that they wanted to finish their seventh album in autumn 2007. The first recordings were made in January at Allaire Studios - where David Bowie was already playing - in the US state of New York . There was Danish producer Jon Schumann , with whom the band worked for the first time. Another personality in preparation for the new album was the resignation of guitarist Harri Mänty, who according to the band will not be replaced for the time being. In a later interview, Joakim Berg gave different views on the musical development as the reason for leaving. Mänty has been performing with the band of Swedish singer Adiam Dymott since 2009 .
In October 2007 Tillbaka till samtiden ( Eng . Back to the Present ) was released as Kent's first Swedish-language album on the German market. While the album quickly proved to be a best seller, especially at home, the single releases fell short of expectations. So Kent could not book a No. 1 hit in the Swedish "Top 60 Hitlistan". The fourth single Vy från ett luftslott was even released for free download. In order to make users of music sharing sites aware of the amount of effort put into the production of music and music videos, the band decided to issue an unusual appeal in June 2008: they invited their fans to make their own videos for the song via YouTube . The winning entry was published and broadcast on music television.
After their summer tour in 2008, Kent withdrew to work in New York on the basic material for their upcoming album. As a "mid-term review" of their career, the band released the Box collection in October 1991-2008 . It includes 10 CDs and a book with interviews, lyrics, private photos, etc. In addition, the song På drift was available for free download in December . It forms the background music for a commercial for the Swedish child protection organization "Friends".
In Meistersaal at Potsdamer Platz Kent began in April 2009 with the recording of their eighth studio album, Röd (dt. Red ). Jon Schumann took on the role of producer again. Half a year later, the single Töntarna was first released digitally and later in the conventional CD format including three remixes . The band presented the album to the Scandinavian press on October 27, 2009 in the Meistersaal. On November 6th, 2009 she played in front of invited guests in New York's “The Bowery” hotel. On the occasion of the start of sales of concert tickets for their new tour, Kent drew attention to an aid campaign in favor of the Stockholm Homeless Association : They produced the theme song for the documentary series “Homeless”, which was shown on Swedish television and the like. a. reports on the work of the association. Under the title 2000 the melody was set to music as a song. The single, limited to 100 physical copies, was auctioned at the club; only a digital version came on the market.
Return to pop rock - second half of his career
After the 2010 winter tour, the band returned to their studio and recorded their ninth album. It is called En plats i solen (Eng. A place in the sun ) and was officially announced only two weeks before it was published. For the first time, Stefan Boman worked as a producer again. A real novelty: There were no music videos for the published singles.
In June 2011 Kent signed a contract with the Universal Music label . This ended a 16-year collaboration with Sony BMG and RCA Records , which began with the album Verkligen . After extensive preparatory work, the band traveled to southern France in November together with photographer Jesper Waldersten . The stay on a rural property with a recording studio, library and guest rooms was used to record new songs. The official announcement of the new album took place in mid-December via website and Facebook: Jag är inte rädd för mörkret ( Eng . I'm not afraid of the dark ) was the band's tenth studio album in April 2012. It was produced again together with Stefan Bomann and presented in a single press conference organized for journalists and fans. In spring and summer, Kent went on tour across Scandinavia with the new material. The sales of the album remained with one gold and one platinum (for 40,000 copies) significantly behind the previous albums.
In August 2013, Kent performed together with Lars Winnerbäck and Robyn in front of 40,000 spectators at the opening concert of the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm. On this occasion the band announced a new album. In December, the recording began, u. a. with a stay of several weeks at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles. As usual, the material was mixed in the Park Studio. Daniel Ledinsky , who is employed by Atlantic Records in New York and runs the Stockholm label Razzia Records, was involved as producer . Already in December 2013 there were various announcements and pictures about the creative process via social networks. In early March 2014, the band officially announced the release of the new single La Belle Époque . The track, which is stylistically linked to the previous album, was released on March 12, 2014 for download on various media platforms. The album followed on April 30, 2014 in physical and digital form as well as vinyl. It bears the title Tigerdrottningen ( Eng . The Tiger Queen ) and consists of eleven songs, in which some guest singers have a part; including the Swedish solo artists Petra Marklund , Camela Leierth and Beatrice Eli as well as the singer and songwriter Erik Hassle . Kent presented their album at live performances in smaller clubs and at three "one day festivals" that took place in May and June 2014 together with other well-known bands in Sweden and Denmark.
On March 13, 2016, the band released a video that announced December 17, 2016 as the anniversary of the band's death. A day later, the end of Kent was officially confirmed. After the twelfth studio album Då Som Nu För Alltid (dt. Then as now, forever ), a best-of album and a major Scandinavian tour in autumn, the band said goodbye to a large audience in Stockholm's Tele2-Arena. The last concert on December 17th was sold out within a few minutes, which is why several additional dates were confirmed. In the run-up to the new album, the single Egoist was released - initially as a download, later as vinyl. After the official release date of Då Som Nu För Alltid, it was represented in the Swedish Top 100 for a week along with the eleven titles on the record.
