history

The community was first mentioned as Geuenesleuo in a forged founding document of the Ilsenburg monastery from 1018.The document is about 100 years younger and was probably forged by a monk to secure rights and possessions for the monastery. Another mention of the place was made in 1135 in a document from Pope Innocent II.

The place probably existed much earlier. This is indicated by the cemetery of Gevensleben with its burials from the period between 800 and 1000, which came to light in early 2016 when a property was redesigned. It probably comprised up to 200 graves, which are presented as simple burials.

Regardless of the knowledge that the founding deed of 1018 was more than 100 years younger and that burials took place on the grave field as early as the 8th century, Gevensleben celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 2018.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Gevensleben is divided diagonally to the left in black and gold, with a golden eagle wing in the upper black half and a black anchor in the lower golden half. Both symbols go back to gender coats of arms from the Middle Ages. The eagle wing was the coat of arms of Widekind de Watenstidde, while the anchor comes from the coat of arms of the Knights of Gevensleben. The coat of arms refers to both districts of the municipality. It was designed by the heraldist Wilhelm Krieg and approved in 1987 by the Helmstedt district.
