Inner German border near Grasleben (July 1989)

The community of Grasleben is located 13 kilometers north of the district town of Helmstedt in the Elm-Lappwald Nature Park . history

The first documented mention of Grasleben can be found around 1150 in a list of goods and taxes from the St. Ludgeri monastery in front of Helmstedt . The history of Grasleben was significantly influenced by the neighborhood of the Mariental Monastery , which Grasleben belonged to for a long time. In 1830 the church was built without a tower, which was later placed in front of it. Under the National Socialists, the salt mine was used as a depot for archival material, such as sound foils with sound recordings from sessions of the Reichstag of the Weimar Republic.

Place name

The old names of the place are around 1150 Graseslove, 1191 Graslove, around 1191 Graselowe, 1197 Graslove, 1225 Grasleve and around 1226 Grasleve. The place name is made up of the old first name “Graso” and “-leben”, in Low German “-leve”, meaning “legacy, heritage”. The old first name is difficult to grasp; therefore, a different approach may be preferable: “Hlaiw” means “hill”, so the meaning “grass hill” would also be possible.

A curiosity is that the place name read backwards results in the word mist coffin .
