history

Danndorf was first mentioned in 1150 as Danthorpe . It is listed in a list of goods of the Benedictine monastery St. Ludgeri in Helmstedt . At that time the monastery owned 10 Hufen land in the village , for which the residents had to pay their tithes . The village is also mentioned in documents in 1333 in the copy book of the Wolfenbüttel State Archives . There it says "Dat dorp Danthorpe dat wutorbyt wost is" (the village of Danndorf that is devastated). It was probably burned down in the feud of the Margrave of Brandenburg against Duke Albrecht the Feisten of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel . In a further mention in a property register of the villages of Vorsfelder Werder from 1366, it says that the von Danndorf give the following as tithe: "10 shillings, 9 harp sheaves and a bushel of rye and as many chickens as men are in the village."

The place was on the Braunschweig – Calvörde postal route .

In 1757 the district of Danndorf was recorded in the general land survey of the Duchy of Braunschweig .

Origin of the place name

The old names of Danndorf are around 1150 in Danthorpe, around 1150 Danthorp, 1333 Danthorpe, 1366–1367 Dandorpe and 1475 Dandorff. The place name is an education with the basic word "-dorf". The defining word is consistently passed down as "Dan-", with "-nn-" not being used until the 17th century. The consistent tradition as "Dan-" speaks for the origin of the Middle Low German "dan" for "Tann, Wald" and for naming the settlement as "Dorf am Wald".

religion

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Cross belongs to the Provosty Vorsfelde and thus to the regional church of Braunschweig . On January 1, 2017, the parish of Danndorf merged with the parish of Grafhorst to form the parish of Danndorf-Grafhorst. The nearest Catholic church is in the neighboring village of Velpke, three kilometers away.
