Forests and grasslands are predominantly managed extensively. The Uhlenhorstwiesen in the south-west and the pinewood meadows in the north-east may not be mowed before June 1st of each year to protect meadow birds. The Uhlenhorstwiesen in particular are criss-crossed by numerous, species-rich ditches .

The forests in the West are of breakage and alluvial forests with alder-ash forests, alder-breaking and swamp forests , Hartholzauwäldern and humid oak-hornbeam forests formed. Grove beech forests also grow on drier locations . Most of the forests in the nature reserve are close to nature. In the area of the Allerauwald south of the Aller, a hardwood alluvial forest with a high proportion of English oak and white elm dominates . There are also alder and ash forests with black alder , common ash , silver and broken willow and oak-hornbeam forests. The alluvial forest has a high proportion of old wood and a partially very well developed shrub layer . The Allerauenwald is designated as a natural forest and is left to its natural development. As part of the major nature conservation project Lower Saxony Drömling, the alluvial forest was reconnected to the river dynamics in 2008 by partially removing the alluvial wall.
