description

The nature reserve is located northeast of Wolfsburg in the Drömling . It places a section of the Drömling lowlands under protection. This was meliorated for agricultural purposes in the second half of the 19th century . In the Politz area, the area is characterized by extensive moist to wet, extensively managed grasslands on fens . Here, for example, common stalk grass , meadowfoam , spicy buttercup , cuckoo carnation and red clover settle . Small- scale alder and ash forests are interspersed in the grasslands . The grasslands are crossed by several ditches. If necessary, water can be supplied to the area via them to ensure the highest possible water levels. In places there are still waters littered in the area , some of which were created as part of the major nature conservation project. The Hegholz area is characterized by larger alder and ash forests and wet meadows. In addition, there are quarry forests and, as mixed oak forests in wet locations, pronounced hardwood alluvial forests . The alluvial and swamp forests are dominated by alders and ash trees. These include willow and white elm, for example . The forests have a high proportion of old and dead wood . In the nature reserve are a variety of water margins, Hochstaudenfluren , reedbeds , Sedge , meadows and forest edges , among other things with Shining Meadow Rue , Yellow meadow rue and marsh sow thistle to find. The wall of the Aller , which runs in the south, was opened in several places in order to flood the area when the Aller floods.

The area is a habitat for beavers and otters . It is home to various species of birds including the hen harrier , Montagu's Harrier , Red Kite , Black Kite , Hobby , crane , curlew , lapwing , snipe , corncrake , wheatear , skylark , meadow pipit , grasshopper warbler , reed bunting , Barred Warbler , Whinchat , Red-backed Shrike , middle spotted woodpecker , lesser spotted woodpecker , nightingale and oriole . The white stork uses the area for foraging. The area is a resting area for water and wading bird species .

The waters are home to wolffish , mud whip and bitterling, and are the habitat of various amphibians , including spadefoot toad , tree frog and moor frog . The area is the habitat of various dragonflies , including Banded Demoiselle , Green Snaketail , yellow-winged darter and tailed Damselfly , butterflies such as wet meadow fritillary, Golden Eight and rust colored skipper and grasshoppers and beetles .

The nature reserve is mainly surrounded by other grasslands. In the south, an alluvial forest joins the Aller . In the northwest the nature reserve borders on the Mittelland Canal and in the northeast and east on the federal highway 244 .
