The nature reserve is located northeast of Gifhorn on a the Hauptmoränenzug the Lueneburg Heath upstream Sander surface. The relatively narrow and elongated nature reserve includes the dry Geestshy ; slope in the east and moist to wet low moors ; areas in the valley of the Beverbach , a tributary of the Aller that borders the nature reserve to the west.
The Geesthang is of pine trees - and birch forest interspersed with grassland dominated areas. The fen areas in the valley are characterized by peat moss - swinging lawns , reed beds and sedge beds . In addition, there are pine, birch, bog forests and alder forests . The abandoned peat cuttings in the bog areas form small areas of water that slowly silt up . Pipegrass grows on the old peat dams .
