The Maaßel is a forest area and a nature reserve located in it in the Lower Saxony municipalities of Rötgesbüttel and Vordorf in the joint municipality of Papenteich and Ribbesbüttel in the joint municipality of Isenbüttel in the Gifhorn district .

Nature reserve

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 052 is 192.88  hectares . It includes the FFH area of ​​the same name . The approximately 60 hectare nature reserve "Maaßeler Lindenwald", designated on March 2, 1983, was completely incorporated into the nature reserve "Maaßel". In addition, portions were of the nature sanctuary "Papenteich and pigs wood" that otherwise surrounds the protected area largely in the nature reserve on. The 11.9 hectare “Maaßel” natural forest reserve, designated in 1972, is located within the nature reserve. The nature reserve has been under nature protection since February 1, 2019. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Gifhorn.

The nature reserve is located southwest of Gifhorn . It places a historically old forest area on a ground moraine under protection. The area is dominated by a near-natural oak-hornbeam forest on fresh to moist locations. There are also grove and woodruff beech forests . Riparian forests are also pronounced along the Vollbütteler Riede .

"Maaßel" nature reserve

The forests are mainly made up of English oak , hornbeam , ash and winter linden , which in some places have a high proportion. The European beech joins this . Very old specimens, some of which are well over 100 years old, grow particularly in the natural forest reserve. Some of the oaks are over 200 years old.

The well-developed shrub layer is formed by hazel and red honeysuckle , among other things . In the herb layer resettle wood anemone , lesser celandine , Yellow Anemone , Ordinary Goldnessel , Oxlip , Great chickweed , Hollow Corydalis , vaginal Yellow Star , Forest yellow star , Stachys sylvatica , White butterfly orchid , Arum maculatum , Dark lungwort , herb Paris , Sanikel , ordinary witches herb , forest Bingelkraut , wild garlic , sweet woodruff , Rasenschmiele , Waldzwenke and Waldsegge .

The alluvial forests along the Vollbütteler Riede are formed as alder and ash alluvial forests with black alder , common ash, hazel, common bird cherry , grass clown, swamp sedge , angular sedge , changeleaf milkweed and celandine.

In the north of the nature reserve there is a grassland  area with a body of water. The “Burckhardts Oak” natural monument is located on the edge of the grassland area . The oak with a trunk diameter of approximately 1.80 meters, which is reminiscent of the forest director Heinrich Christian Burckhardt, is to be preserved as a deadwood biotope. Further grasslands are included in the right-hand lowland area of ​​the Vollbütteler Riede, which borders the nature reserve in the northwest.

The grasslands accommodate z. B. oat grass , the ragged robin , cuckoo flower , sharp buttercup , bird vetch , Lathyrus pratensis and red clover . They are the feeding habitat of the white stork, among others . The nature reserve houses z. B. Middle woodpecker , small woodpecker , nuthatch , treecreeper and marsh tit .

To the northeast, further forest communities of the Maaßel join the nature reserve. Otherwise it is mainly surrounded by agricultural land. The circuit road 48 between Didderse and Rötgesbüttel passes through the forest area.
