history

The area, which is now under protection, was a barely penetrable marsh landscape until the 18th century, in which swamp forests predominated. The Drömling was made arable through amelioration . There were Rimpau'sche Moor dam cultures created that can be seen through its many parallel trenches today.

Today's nature reserve was located directly on what was then the inner-German border and, despite its ecological importance, could not be officially placed under nature protection. On the other hand, there was hardly any agricultural use, so that numerous species settled here. After the fall of the Wall , the area was designated as a BR 085 nature reserve on July 8, 1990 with effect from July 30, 1990. Since then, the district of Gifhorn has been responsible. Shortly before, were in former East Germany the page Nature Park "Drömling" was founded and been expelled more nature reserves.

Ecology, flora and fauna

Landscape in the south of the area

The NSG Kaiserwinkel is surrounded by other nature reserves. Directly to the east is the Böckwitz-Jahrstedter Drömling area in Saxony-Anhalt ; in the south lies the Breitenrode-Oebisfelder Drömling . Both areas are total reserves and have belonged to the 103 km² large NSG Ohre-Drömling since 2005 . To the west of a strip around one kilometer wide, which has been part of the “Schulenburgscher Drömling” NSG since 2019, lies the Giebelmoor nature reserve , where alder and birch forests predominate.

The NSG Kaiserwinkel belongs entirely to the FFH area 92 “Drömling” and the EU bird sanctuary V46 “Drömling”. In addition to grassland, tall herbaceous vegetation and large sedge areas, there are alder forests and other groups of trees. Most of the poplars , which were common in the past , were felled to raise the water table and thus accelerate the waterlogging of the area.

The area is the habitat of numerous threatened species. Therefore, entry is prohibited from mid-February to the end of June. In addition to cranes and white storks , numerous other bird species such as the common owl and red- backed shrike live here . Water feathers , meadow rue and swamp fern grow in and on the numerous ditches . The owner is still allowed to hunt. Agricultural and forestry use is permitted to a limited extent in designated parts of the nature reserve.
