Kohlwald pit
The Kohlwald coal mine in Saarland existed between 1750 and 1966 in the vicinity of Wiebelskirchen and Schiffweiler .
history
As early as the 15th century, coal was dug in the vicinity of Wiebelskirchen (in the Kohlwald) . In 1750 a pit in the cabbage forest is mentioned for the first time.
In 1823, coal production was temporarily stopped because the coal production required too large quantities of wood , which were used for more profitable pits in the vicinity.
It was not until 1843 that coal mining was resumed in the Kohlwald, until the mine was finally closed on March 31, 1966.
