The Schnuckenheide (officially: Schnuckenheide bei Repke ) is a nature reserve in the Gifhorn district in Lower Saxony . It is known for its juniper population in a heathland .

Surname

The Schnuckenheide is named after the Heidschnucken who lived as a herd in the area.

geography

The nature reserve belongs to the natural area " Lüneburg Heath and Wendland " and is 20.7 hectares in size. It is located northeast of Repke near the federal highway 244 , which connects Dedelstorf and Hankensbüttel in this section .

The Schnuckenheide-Repke glider airfield is located immediately to the west of the nature reserve .

history

The area was placed under protection on January 23, 1975. It is the former deciduous forest hude ebbecker Fier .

Flora and fauna

In the nature reserve you can find loosely standing birch trees and some oaks, numerous junipers. Often there heather and bell heather and grasses, mosses and lichens. The English gorse and the hairy gorse also grow there.

In the sand heath there are only around 20-30 bird breeding pairs per km². The number is higher in the juniper heather. Larks , pipits and field thrushes in particular breed here. There are also sand lizards and adders as well as numerous insects such as earth bees and sand bees , ant lions , ground beetles and the heather beetles, which occur periodically .
