The nature reserve lies between Neubrück and Hillerse. It protects a near-natural, meandering section of the Oker, including the valley floodplain and the adjacent slope terrace . The floodplain is predominantly characterized by grassland that is periodically flooded. The partly unpaved banks of the Oker form abrupt edges and sand deposits . Oxygen arms and flood channels can be found along the course of the river . The river banks are often of Hochstaudenfluren and reeds dominated areas. In addition, alluvial forest remains and mixed oak forests can be found.

During bird migration , the protected area is an important resting and feeding habitat for migrating water bird species . The area is also a habitat for various waders , stilts and pipiters .

The area has been a nature reserve since March 26, 2009. Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the district of Gifhorn and the district of Peine.
